Identifying areas of opportunity
Over five years ago, we began to reevaluate the approach we were taking to our operations and culture at Mary Free Bed at Home. While we have always had a focus on excellent patient care and customer service, these proactive measures were taken to incorporate fresh perspectives, implement new strategies, and ensure our continued success as a community.
As our Vice President of Operations and Administrator, Trey Kubizna (who has been with the team for over 17 years) has been instrumental in guiding this initiative along the way. He and his team started by meeting with people across different departments and listening to their input on best practices and potential improvements.
“There was a methodical approach to listening and adapting to the needs of patients and the needs of our staff; in particular, the staff directly caring for patients in their homes,” Trey shares. “What we created was a collaborative and cohesive team that has a foundation of trust, transparency, and authentic vulnerability.”
Adopting new processes
These early conversations soon gave way to real changes for the Mary Free Bed at Home team. This included reducing the number of weekends RNs were required to work by hiring weekend Admission Nurses. Another method of improving work-life balance for team members was offering four-day workweeks to team members when possible.
Training and development were also prioritized, with a new protocol put in place for all new field clinicians. Throughout their first year, weekly case conferencing calls are now held to ensure these new hires are fully supported.
“We began investing more time into the ‘people taking care of people’ through in-person connection,” Trey notes. “When we fill the cups of others, they are able to do the hard work of caring for people who really need our help!”
Looking ahead to the future
The Mary Free Bed at Home team has had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to these new practices – and the positive effects go beyond the shift in culture. Our success has carried over to patient care and was a driving force in our recent CMS five-star patient satisfaction rating.
